Flocking of starlings
Every year, starlings gather in flocks to migrate towards the Mediterranean. Young and unpaired starlings begin to gather as early as August. Over time, the groups become larger and larger until flocks of thousands are formed in October. When they arrive at their roosting places in reed beds in the evening, it looks like a living black cloud. A flying starling orients itself in its movement to its fellow flyers in its immediate vicinity, making the flock appear almost like a cohesive organism. Even inexperienced flock members find their way to the wintering regions in this way, while it is difficult for birds of prey to fix on and capture a single bird.
